DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia volleyball team jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but Duke rallied to win the finals two games for a 3-2 (31-29, 27-30, 26-30, 30-24, 15-11) marathon victory over the Cavaliers at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the loss, UVa falls to 7-14 overall and 3-10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Duke improves to 18-3 overall and 10-3 in the ACC.
The Blue Devils took a tight 31-29 win in the first game, but Virginia rallied with 30-27 and 30-26 victories in the second and third games, respectively, to take a 2-1 advantage. Duke evened the match at two games apiece with a 30-24 triumph in the fourth game. The Blue Devils then won the fifth and deciding game 15-11 for a 3-2 win that took two hours and 25 minutes to complete.
Fourth-year outside hitter Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) led the Cavaliers with 19 kills and added nine digs, six blocks, two assists and a service ace. Second-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) tallied 17 kills and seven digs for UVa. Second-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) recorded a double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs, while second-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) led the Cavaliers with 17 digs. Fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) notched nine kills, four blocks and three service aces. First-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) added 24 assists and eight digs, while first-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) registered a match and career-high eight blocks.
Ashley Harris paced Duke with 20 kills and 17 digs for the team’s lone double-double. Dorrette Burwell added 17 kills, while Krista Dill contributed 11 kills. Josie Weymann led all players with 20 digs, while Arielle Linderman tallied 29 assists.
Both teams registered 67 kills in the match with the Blue Devils out-hitting UVa .193 to .160. Duke held an 85-70 edge in digs, while the Cavaliers had a 12-9 advantage in team blocks.
The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday, November 4 when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for a 5:00 p.m. match against Wake Forest.
