Virginia's Amstutz And Roesch Earn ACC Weekly Honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia men’s diver Peter Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and women’s swimmer Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s ACC Men’s and Women’s Swimmer of the Week, respectively. Amstutz, who is the first diver to earn the ACC’s weekly honor, shares the men’s award with Clemson’s Drew Scheerhorn. The UVa men’s team defeated Clemson 148-89 on October 27 to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Cavalier women moved to 3-0 on the year with a 155.5-84.5 victory over Clemson and a 131-73 win over Rice on October 27.

Amstutz, a sophomore, was named the ACC Swimmer of the Week, after winning the one-meter diving competition versus Clemson with a career-best score of 299.48 points. With his point total, Amstutz qualified for the NCAA Zone B Diving Regionals for the first time in his career. Amstutz was also second on the three-meter board with a score of 264.53.

Roesch, a senior, had three excellent performances against Clemson and Rice in freestyle events in earning the women’s ACC Swimmer of the Week award. She helped the Cavaliers win the 400 free relay (3:29.01) by swimming the leadoff leg in 51.44 seconds. Roesch was also second in the 50 free with a time of 23.67 seconds and placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.90.

Roesch was also recently named to the 2001 College Swimming Coaches Association of America honorable mention Academic All-America team. Roesch was one of four Virginia swimmers honored by the CSCAA. She was inadvertently left off the original list of CSCAA Academic All-Americans announced in August.

The Virginia women’s swimming and diving team returns to action at the Rice Invitational on November 9-10.
