DALTON, Ga. – The University of Virginia golf team finished 12th in the 15-team Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic Tournament on Sunday (Oct. 7).

Georgia Tech won the 54-hole tournament with a six-under-par total of 858 on the par 72 course at The Farm Golf Club. The University of Tennessee finished second with a four-over-par total of 868 and Wake Forest University was third with an eight-over-par total of 872. Virginia finished 12th with a team total of 913.

D.J. Trahan of Clemson University won the individual competition with a six-under-par total of 210 after rounds of 69-69-72. Camilo Villegas of the University of Florida finished second with a four-under-par total of 212 (75-65-72), and Ryan Hybl of the University of Georgia (72-71-70) and Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech (68-69-76) tied for third with three-under-par totals of 213.

Virginia’s top finisher was senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) who tied for 30th in the individual competition with a nine-over-par total of 225 (77-73-75). Also competing for the Cavaliers were junior Justin Goodhue (74-73-81 228, Glastonbury, Conn.), junior Thomas Lee (77-76-80 233, Guttenburg, N.J.), sophomore Jeremy Luce (77-81-75, 233, Austin, Texas) and senior Shep Nowlin (81-86-75 242, Lynchburg, Va.).

The Cavaliers compete next in the Duke Golf Classic scheduled for October 14-15 in Durham, N.C.
