Virginia’s Jennifer Owens took third at the NCAA Southeast Regional and teammates Sarah Folse and Meg McGarvey took 8th and 17th overall as the fourteenth-ranked Cavaliers finished third as a team, giving them enough points to qualify for the NCAA national championships next week at Furman University. Owens covered the 6K race in 21:02 and Folse ran a 21:40. Virginia’s third through eight runners were all just 50 seconds apart, a pack that solidified Virginia’s third place finish. On the men’s side, Walton Kingsberry took 13th, earning All-Region honors and a trip to the NCAA championships as well as the men took fifth as a team.
The Virginia women last went to the NCAA championships in 1993.
The men are awaiting a bid which will be extended on Monday. Kingsberry will go as an at-large selection even if the men are not selected as an at-large team.
