CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Thomas “Ted” Edward Davenport, the executive director of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation from 1958 to 1988, died Monday, Nov. 26, at age 73, as the result of a heart attack.

As executive director of the VSAF, Davenport oversaw the scholarship fund-raising arm of the University of Virginia Athletics Department. Founded in 1948, the VSAF is a non-profit foundation that works to improve the quality of athletics at the University of Virginia and is the sole source of funds for athletic grants-in-aid at UVa.

From 1988 to 1992, Davenport served as chief operating officer of the Virginia Auxiliary Services Foundation and was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of Virginia’s Birdwood Golf Course. He had served as executive director of the Virginia Auxiliary Services Foundation since the golf course opened in 1984.

Among his many ofther contributions to UVa athletics, Davenport served as Virginia’s head baseball coach in 1960 and 1961 and as head golf coach from 1979 to 1981.

Davenport was a 1953 graduate of the University and played baseball under head coach Gus Tebell. He was a two-time team captain and twice earned All-State recognition.

In February of 1998, a Ted Davenport Endowed Baseball Fund was established at UVa to provide baseball scholarships and to support other projects for the Virginia baseball program.

Davenport is survived by his wife, Virginia Fulcher Davenport, a sister, Mary G. Lunsford of Delaplane, Va., a brother, John W. Davenport of Staunton, Va., and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29 at Monticello Memory Gardens in Albemarle County.
