UVa Takes The Lead After First Day Of Cavalier Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both lead the 2001 Cavalier Invitational after Thursday’s (November 29) first day of competition at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Virginia men set three meet records in winning all six events, while the Cavalier women set two meet records and won five events outright and tied with Texas A&M for first place in the final event.
On the men’s side, the 11th-ranked Cavaliers lead the nine-team competition with 337.50 points after six of 21 events, while West Chester is a distant second with 191.50 points. UMBC is third with 178 and West Virginia is fourth with 161 points. Rounding out the men’s field is Yale (131), Columbia (104), Villanova (69) and Central Connecticut (29).
After six events, the 14th-ranked Virginia women lead the other eight teams with 376 points. Texas A&M is second with 184 points, while West Virginia and West Chester are third and fourth with 143 and 142 points, respectively. Richmond is fifth (131), followed by UMBC (112), Yale (93), Central Connecticut (33) and Villanova (3).
Second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) got the Cavaliers off to a great start in the 200 free relay by setting a 50 free meet record with his leadoff split of 20.26. UVa went on to win the 200 free relay with a meet record time of 1:21.89. Second-years Jonathan Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) and third-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) swam the other legs on the winning 200 free relay. Yimsomruay, Kerpelman and Anderson, also swam on the Cavaliers’ winning 400 medley relay that touched in 3:21.65. First-year Chad Barlow (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) swam the leadoff leg on the medley relay. Yimsomruay also broke his own meet record in the 200 individual medley with a winning time of 1:49.23. First-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) and fourth-year Chris Mousetis (Newport News, Va./Woodside) were second and third with time of 1:50.49 and 1:51.23, respectively. In addition to swimming on UVa’s two winning relays, Kerpelman won the 50 free with a time of 20.78. Second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena) won the 500 free in 4:27.12, while third-year Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) was second with a time of 4:29.39. Fourth-year Joe Piorkowski (Easton, Pa./Easton) won the one-meter diving competition with 259.45 points, while second-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) was second with 248.20 points.
On the women’s side, third-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) won a pair of events during the first day of competition for the Cavaliers. Bosevska led a top-four UVa sweep in the 500 free with a time of 4:49.56, just 43 hundredths of a second ahead of second-year teammate Carlie Dykehouse (Gainesville, Fla./Trinity Prep), who finished in 4:49.99. Bosevska also won the 200 individual medley with a meet record time of 2:03.26. Third-year Alison Sharp (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) set a Cavalier Invitational record in winning the women’s one-meter diving competition with 274.85 points. Virginia opened the finals session by winning the 200 free relay with a time of 1:34.59. Fourth-year Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), first-years Andrea Georoff (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) and Carrie Ellis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) and third-year Lindsey Crane (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) also swam legs on the victorious relay. The Cavaliers tied with Texas A&M for first place in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:52.19. Roesch, fourth-year Caitlin Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s) and Ellis swam on the medley relay for UVa, while Courtney Patterson, Kelsey Savage, Clara Ho an Danielle Townsend swam the winning relay for Texas A&M. The Cavaliers also took the top three spots in the 50 free with Georoff grabbing first place with a time of 23.41. Roesch was second in 23.51 and Ellis was third with a time of 23.94.
The second day of the Cavalier Invitational gets under way at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning. Finals commence at 6:00 p.m.
