Lindsey Named ACC Player Of The Year

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Four Virginia players were honored by the ACC coaches as All-Conference selections on Wednesday night, at a pre-tournament banquet.
Lori Lindsey was named ACC Player-of-the-Year for a second year in a row. The senior from Indianapolis, Ind., finished second on the team in scoring with 19 points. She garnered the same award last season, and has been named first team All-ACC three years in a row, as well as second team as a freshman. During her senior season, she was named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week on Sept. 4 and SoccerBuzz’ Elite Eight on Oct. 11. Virginia’s active scoring leader, Lindsey has played in 80 career games and is eighth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 69 points and sixth with 30 career goals. She scored three game-winning goals this year, including an overtime goal in a 3-2 victory over Brigham Young on Oct. 4. Lindsey is also on the watch list for two national awards, the Hermann Award and the Missouri Athletic Club Award.
Junior defender Kelly Worden was named second team All-ACC for a second year in a row. Worden, a Spring, Texas, native, has played in all 17 games this season, starting in 16 of those games. As the veteran leader of Virginia’s corps of defenders, she has helped the team to eight shutouts, and has spearheaded a defense that has allowed 10 or fewer shots in 12 of 17 games this season. The Cavaliers were 11-1 in those 12 games. She has also added three assists for the season, most of any Virginia defender. An education major, Worden was named Virginia Student Athlete of the Month for October, demonstrating her ability in the classroom.
First-year players Lindsay Gusick and Jessica Trainor were also honored. Gusick was named second team All-ACC and to the ACC All-Freshman team. Trainor was also a selection to the All-Freshman team. Gusick had one of the finer seasons in UVa history, leading the team in goals (13) and scoring (27 points). She is the fourth Virginia player ever to score at least 13 goals in a single-season, the first since Angela Hucles scored 13 in 1998. She also scored five game-winning goals including a overtime goal in a 2-1 victory over Duke on Oct. 20 and also added three multi-goal games, including a hat trick against Liberty on Sept. 26. Gusick was named ACC Player of the Week on Oct. 22 and was named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week twice this season and in addition to Lindsey, was named to SoccerBuzz’ Elite Eight.
Trainor was the only first-year player to start in all 17 games, and was second only to Lindsey with 1,544 minutes played this season. Trainor has been a durable and athletic player all year, and is noted most for her ability to keep the ball in play and set up scoring opportunities. She added two assists, most recently, assisting on Taylor Wood’s game-winner in a 3-2 victory over Florida State on Oct. 28.
“This is a terrific honor for these four individuals,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “I couldn’t be happier seeing Lori get Player of the Year for a second year in a row. I think the fact these players were honored in such a way is a true testament to the teammates they have around them. We’re excited to take the next step of our season, which is the postseason.”
