Virginia Wrestling Competes in the 2001 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

PRIMM, Nevada – The University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the 2001 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. UVa’s Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md/Williamsport), Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and first-year wrestler Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) highlighted the Cavaliers in the event. The Virginia trio finished with a winning record and each wrestler competed in the consolation finals of their weight class.

Massey finished 3-1 at 184 and defeated Dana’s Arthur Castillo by the score of 5-2 in the consolation finals. He also recorded a 9-3 decision over Army’s Matt Bernard and an 8-5 decision over Wyoming’s Kevin Kessner to advance to the consolation finals round. Massey’s only setback was a close 3-1 overtime loss to Pittsburgh’s Dan Stine.

Muir posted a team-high four wins for UVa after finishing 4-2 at 174. After splitting his first two matches, Muir went on to win three consecutive bouts with a major decision victory, a fall and a forfeit with wins over Dickinson State’s Shawn Karol (MD, 12-4), Stanford’s Imad Kharbush (fall @ 1:55) and Brown’s Adam Santee (forfeit) before falling to Matt Cobb of Missouri Valley College in the consolation finals, 4-2. Muir won his first match by posting a 12-2 major decision victory over North Idaho’s Bryan Zimmerman.

Durkee went 3-2 at 165 and also won three consecutive matches in the consolation bracket over Northern Colorado’s Jared Deaguero (5-0), Central Oklahoma’s Mark Gibson (6-0) and Harvard’s Patrick O’Donnell (7-5) before falling to Michigan’s Charles Martelli by the score of 7-6 in the consolation finals.

The Cavaliers’ Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Paul Dunstan (Oberlin, Ohio/St. Edwards) each finished 2-2 in their respective weight classes. Foley defeated Cal Poly’s Robb Maxwell (13-12) and North Dakota State’s Paul Carlson (fall @ 6:36) at 157, while Dunstan defeated N.C. State’s Dave Miller (9-5) and Dickinson State’s Tyrone Martinez (7-3) at 149.

Virginia’s Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) and Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) each recorded a victory after Seidel defeated Northern Colorado’s Ronnie Stafford by the score of 9-4 at 141 and Etu topped California-Davis’ Jason Paul by the count of 9-4 in the heavyweight class.

UVa’s Byron Dunlap (York, Pa./Dallastown) and Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) finished 0-2 at 125 and 197, respectively.

Virginia will return to action on Saturday, January 5th when the Cavaliers face Lock Haven (12:00 p.m.) and George Mason (4:00 p.m.) in dual match action. Both matches will take place at Memorial Gymnasium.
