Virginia Wrestling Competes in the 2001 Penn State Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Seven members of the University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the 2001 Penn State Open. The Cavaliers were highlighted by the duo of Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle). Carlo-Clauss recorded a third place finish after posting a 5-1 mark in the 157 class, while Painter placed fourth after turning in a 3-2 record in the heavyweight class.
Carlo-Clauss began competition at 157 by winning won four consecutive matches after defeating Navy’s Mike Carbonaro (9-3), Buffalo’s Angelo Ashker (MD, 14-4), Lock Haven’s Chris Haines (3-1) and Eastern Michigan’s Derrick Keasley (8-2) before falling to Pittsburgh’s Shad Benton by the score of 7-2. Carlo-Clauss then earned a medical forfeit victory over Bloomsburg’s George Carter to earn a third place finish in the class.
Painter started competition in the heavyweight class by winning three consecutive matches after defeating Duquesne’s Corey Anderson (9-2), Bloomsburg’s Pat Spirelli (3-0) and Eastern Michigan’s Kenny Leckrone (medical forfeit) before falling to Penn’s Matt Feast by the score of 7-2. Painter then loss a tough 4-1 decision to Penn State’s Josh Walker to earn a fourth place finish in the class.
UVa’s Matt Magerko (Farnham, Va./Northumberland) and Steve Mazzola (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) also finished with a 3-2 record in their respective weight class. Magerko’s three victories came in the heavyweight class by defeating Penn State’s Ryan Root (2-1, OT), Daryl Stackhouse (6-4) and James Madison’s Chris Miller (fall @ 1:35). Mazzola’s three wins came in the 174 class by defeating Virginia Tech’s Tomas Ovalle (4-3), George Mason’s Neil Johnson (10-6) and Penn’s Mike Reitmeyer (4-2).
The Cavaliers’ Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) went 1-1 in the 149 class and recorded a 12-2 major decision victory over ESU’s Chris D’Andrea. UVa’s Cartney Curnuck (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and Andy DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) finished 0-1 at 165 and 197, respectively.
Virginia will return to action on Saturday, January 5th when the Cavaliers face Lock Haven (12:00 p.m.) and George Mason (4:00 p.m.) in dual match action. Both matches will take place at Memorial Gymnasium.
