Former Golfer Andrea Brotto Dies Suddenly

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Andrea Brotto, 26, a first-year student at the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, died suddenly on Friday, Dec. 14 in his Charlottesville home, the victim of an apparent heart attack.
A 1999 graduate of the University of Virginia, Brotto was born in Carimate, Italy, in the northern province of Como. He attended Liceo Scientifico “De Amcis” and concluded his schooling in Italy by recording a perfect score on the “maturita”, or maturity certificate, in 1994. After a year of service in the Italian military, where he specialized in “Bersagliera”, or offensive running, he entered the University of Virginia in September 1995.
A brilliant student and golfer, Brotto majored in Systems Engineering and was a four-year letterwinner with the Cavalier golf team. He made the Dean’s List every semester at UVa, was named to the ACC Honor Roll four times, and in 1998 was named Academic All-American in golf. In 1998 Brotto also received the Ralph Sampson Scholarship, given annually by the athletic department to a “third-year student athlete who best demonstrates excellence in academics, leadership and athletics.” In his final year he served as captain of the golf team.
Brotto’s international golf career flourished in the 1990s. He won the Italian Amateur at stroke play in 1994, and at match play in 1995. In 1995, he also won the Spanish Under-21 Championship, represented Continental Europe in the Continental Cup Matches, represented Italy in the World Amateur Team Championship held in the Philippines, and was named “Italian Amateur Golfer of the Year”. While competing for the University, Brotto was team medallist numerous times and “broke par” 27 times in his career. In 1996, he was also named All-State in Virginia among other college golfers.
Prior to graduating from UVa, Brotto engaged a number of internships, including work as a macro developer at EAGLE Corp. in Charlottesville. Upon graduation in 1999, he accepted a position with American Management Systems, Inc. in Fairfax. At AMS, Brotto specialized as a business analyst within the Telecommunications industry Group. He lived in Fairfax and worked at AMS for two years before returning to Charlottesville in August to begin with the MBA program at Darden.
Known for his sharp wit and incomparable work ethic, his love of family and friends, his boisterous laughter, his passion for good food, his desire for any intellectual and physical challenges and his love for life itself, Brotto lifted and inspired so many who were fortunate to be his friends and colleagues.
This year had been especially joyous for Andrea Brotto, with his marriage to the former Jamie Adkins of Chesapeake, their return to UVa, and the birth of their daughter, Giorgia.
In addition to his wife Jamie and baby Giorgia, Andrea Brotto is survived by his parents, Mario and Rosella of Carimate, and his brothers, Alessandro and Riccardo, also of Carimate.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at the Teague Funeral Chapel, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville.
