The Game
Virginia (2000-2001: 20-9/9-7 ACC), ranked fourth in both the AP and USAToday/ESPN polls, stands at 8-0 this season. The Cavaliers are coming off a 76-68 victory over Rutgers (Dec. 23) at University Hall. Grambling (2000-2001: 8-18/8-10 Southwestern Athletic Conference) stands at 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the SWAC in the 2001-2002 season. The Tigers are coming off a 93-69 loss to Arkansas-Little Rock (Dec. 21) at Memorial Gym in Grambling, La.

Today’s game against Grambling is Virginia’s first-ever meeting versus the Tigers in the sport of men’s basketball.
Virginia vs. the Southwestern Athletic Conference
Today’s game is also the Cavaliers’ first against a team from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The other nine teams in the SWAC are: Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Alcorn State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Prairie View A&M, Southern University, and Texas Southern.
Virginia vs. Teams from Louisiana
Virginia has played eight games against teams from the state of Louisiana and is 6-2 in those games. UVa is 3-0 vs. Tulane, 1-0 vs. Louisiana State, Nicholls State and Louisiana-Monroe (formerly Northeast Louisiana), and 0-2 vs. New Orleans.
In its most recent game against a team from Louisiana, the Cavaliers posted a 96-72 victory over Nicholls State in the first round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio.
UVa is 2-1 all-time against teams from Louisiana in University Hall. Virginia defeated Tulane 91-70 in 1977-78 and Northeast Louisiana (Louisiana-Monroe) 79-78 in the first round of the 1979 NIT. In the Cavaliers’ most recent game against a team from Louisiana in U-Hall, Virginia fell to New Orleans 60-55 on November 30, 1990.
Cavaliers Move up to Fourth
Virginia is ranked fourth in The Associated Press (as well as the USAToday/ESPN) Poll, marking the Cavaliers’ highest ranking in the AP poll since the 1982-83 season. UVa was ranked second in the March 8 AP poll. UVa was ranked fourth in the final AP poll (Mar. 15) of the 1982-83 season.
Non-Conference Regular Season Winning Streak
Virginia has won a school record 25 consecutive regular season games against non-conference opponents. The previous record for consecutive non-conference regular season victories was 22. During its current streak, UVa has won all three of its games against ranked non-ACC teams. Virginia beat fourth-ranked Tennessee 107-89 (Dec. 19) and 20th-ranked Missouri 85-72 (Jan. 20) during the 2000-01 season and defeated 16th-ranked Georgetown 61-55 (Dec. 20) at MCI Center in Washington, D.C. The streak began with a 98-67 win against Loyola (Md.) at University Hall on December 8, 1999. The last time the Cavaliers lost to a non-conference opponent during the regular season was on December 4, 1999 when they lost 85-63 to St. John’s University at Madison Square Garden. Since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia won 22 consecutive non-conference regular season games from November 21, 1981 to December 19, 1982. UVa began the streak with a 63-61 win over Brigham Young (Nov. 21) to start the 1981-82 season. The streak ended the next season when Virginia lost to Chaminade 77-72 (Dec. 23).
Non-Conference Teams at University Hall
Virginia is 192-28 (.873) all-time in University Hall against non-conference opponents since the building opened for the 1965-66 season. The Cavaliers have won 74 of their last 83 home games, including the last 13, against non-conference opponents dating back to the 1989-90 season.
Back-to-Back 8-0 Starts
With its 8-0 start this season, Virginia has posted back-to-back 8-0 starts for the first time since the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons. The Cavaliers won their first 10 games of the 2000-2001 season.
In 1982-83, UVa won its first eight games to start the season, then Virginia won its first 10 games in the 1983-84 season.
The only time UVa has had back-to-back 9-0 starts was in the 1980-81 (12-0) and 1981-82 (23-0) seasons.
Brown Named ACC Rookie of the Week
Freshman forward Elton Brown was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week (Dec. 24) after scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds in Cavalier victories over Charleston Southern (Dec. 17), Georgetown (Dec. 20) and Rutgers (Dec. 23). Brown was eight for 20 (40 percent) from the field, including two for two from three-point range in 43 minutes of action. In UVa’s 61-55 victory over 16th-ranked Georgetown, Brown had 10 points and three rebounds.
Hall Nets 1,000th Career Point
Senior forward/guard Adam Hall became the 35th Cavalier to score 1,000 career points when he eclipsed the milestone against Rutgers on December 23. Hall reached the 1,000 point plateau with a baseline jumper with 13:54 remaining in the second half that tied the game at 48-48.
Chris Williams became the 34th UVa player to score 1,000 career points last season against Coastal Carolina (Nov. 20, 2000). Hall is averaging 10.8 points per game this season and is shooting 42.5 percent (31-73) from the field. He has made six of 17 three-pointers (35.3 percent).
