Men's Lacrosse Signs 10 During Early Signing Period

Charlottesville, Va. – University of Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia announces the signing of 10 student-athletes to national letters of intent to play lacrosse at UVa beginning in the 2002-03 academic year.
The signees are: Mike Abbott (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham), Pat Buchanan (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock), Mike Culver (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), Kyle Dixon (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Newton Gentry (Annapolis, Md./Mount St. Joseph), Foster Gilbert (Radnor, Pa./Haverford School), Charlie Glazer (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School), Chris Ourisman (Bethesda, Md./Landon), Matt Poskay (Clark, N.J./A.L. Johnson), and Matt Ward (Oakton, Va./Landon).
Abbott, a 5-10, 175-pound midfielder from Syracuse, N.Y., was an All-Central New York selection last season as a junior when he scored 52 goals and added 26 assists. He was captain of the Syracuse-area team in the Empire State Games. Abbott is also a noted hockey player. His father, Tom, was an attackman for Syracuse from 1975-78.
Buchanan is a 6-2, 195-pound defenseman from Burke, Va. He was a high school lacrosse All-American last spring as a junior at Lake Braddock High School. An outstanding athlete, Buchanan plays linebacker on his school’s football team and also earned All-Region honors last winter in the indoor track high hurdles.
Culver is a 6-1, 200-pound defenseman from Ridgewood, N.J. He was an All-League performer last spring and earned second-team All-State honors. He has also been an All-League selection in football as a middle linebacker.
Dixon is a 6-4, 205-pound midfielder from Millersville, Md. He was named All-Anne Arundel County and second-team All-Metro last spring after scoring 57 goals and adding 63 assists to lead Archbishop Spalding to its second state championship in a row. Dixon was also a Free State and 205 All-Star.
Gentry is a 6-0, 185-pound midfielder from Annapolis, Md. He was named All-Baltimore City/County this past spring and second-team All-Metro. He scored 37 goals and added 19 assists, which included eight three-goal games and one four-goal game, while alternating between attack and midfield. He has led his team in scoring the last two years. He also plays defensive back on the school’s football team.
Gilbert is a 6-1, 190-pound attackman from Radnor, Pa. Gilbert was a high school All-American in the spring and was named First-Team All-State. He is no stranger to UVa lacrosse as his older brother Tyler played for Starsia and graduated last May. The younger Gilbert also plays soccer.
Glazer is a 6-0, 185-pound midfielder from Greenwich, Conn., who specializes as a face-off man. He was named to the Connecticut Super Juniors last season. He also plays hockey and was an honorable mention All-League strong safety in football this season.
Ourisman is a 6-0, 190-pound defenseman from Bethesda, Md. He was one of the standouts on Landon’s top-ranked squad that allowed an average of just 6.6 goals per game last spring. He was named a Free State and 205 All-Star. Ourisman also plays soccer.
Poskay is a 6-1, 185-pound midfielder from Clark, N.J. He earned All-American status last spring after scoring 129 goals and adding 28 assists. He was named New Jersey Midfielder of the Year and was first-team All-State. He is the leading scorer in state history with 288 goals and 370 points. An outstanding athlete, he quarterbacks the football team and is a point guard on the basketball team.
Ward is a 5-10, 190-pound attackman from Oakton, Va. A teammate of Ourisman, he was named the Metro D.C. Player of the Year last season. An All-State selection, he scored 45 goals and added 18 assists for Landon’s top-ranked squad. He is also a two-way player on the football team.
“We are very pleased to introduce the Virginia men’s lacrosse Class of 2006,” said Starsia. “Inside Lacrosse magazine chose our present freshmen group #1 in the country. This next class is not far behind. With size and speed at each position, these young men will make an athletic contribution all over the field. Virginia lacrosse fans will enjoy watching them develop.”
