CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A 2001-02 men’s basketball schedule featuring 16 home games has been released by Craig Littlepage, interim athletic director at the University of Virginia. The Cavaliers are scheduled to play 13 games during the regular season against teams that competed in the 2001 NCAA Tournament.

“I think our schedule is extremely difficult,” said UVa men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen. “That’s a good thing because it will help prepare us for the brutal competition in the ACC. We played a tough schedule last year, but this year’s schedule is even more demanding. I think this schedule will be exciting for our fans, exciting for our players and exciting for our coaching staff.”

Virginia opens its 2001-02 season with home games against Wagner College (Nov. 16), East Tennessee State University (Nov. 18) and Howard University (Nov. 21). UVa plays eight games against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents at home and also faces non-conference opponents Virginia Tech, Charleston Southern University, Rutgers University, Grambling State University, and Virginia Military Institute in addition to Wagner, East Tennessee State and Howard.

The Cavaliers’ road schedule features games with Virginia’s eight ACC rivals, neutral site games with Michigan State University in Richmond, Va., (ACC/Big 10 Challenge) and Auburn University in Birmingham, Ala., and games at Georgetown University (John Thompson Classic) and the University of Missouri.

The 49th annual ACC Tournament is scheduled for March 7-10 in Charlotte, N.C.
