Women's Soccer Downs Oakland 7-1 In Exhibition Opener

The Virginia women’s soccer team played the first of its two exhibition games this season on Wednesday night, picking up a 7-1 win over Oakland University in Traverse City, Mich.

“It was a good performance by us, and a good start to the season,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “We were trying a lot of people at different positions, and this was a good game to experiment with. We have some work to do, but it was a good start and we’re looking forward to taking on Michigan later this week.”

Oakland scored a goal in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Cavaliers quickly rebounded en route to seven unanswered goals. Sarah Lane scored first, then later added two more goals to lead all scores. Erin Engelhardt and Lori Lindsey each added goals, as did first-year players Lindsay Gusick and Gilian Hatch.

“It was nice to see some of our first-year players come through and score for us,” Swanson added. “In addition to adding more depth for us, they are going to make an impact for us.” The 2001 first-year class of Gusick, Hatch along with Katie Bunch, Jamie Fabrizio, Erin Lycan, Jessica Trainor and Taylor Wood, was ranked the number one recruiting class in the country according to soccerbuzz.com.

The Cavaliers will remain in Michigan over the next couple of days as part of their fall training camp. They travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the Michigan Wolverines on Friday afternoon. They open their regular season schedule on Sept. 1, with a home game against Mississippi.

NOTES – The Cavaliers are ranked ninth in the NSCAA poll … the Cavaliers were predicted to finish second behind defending National Champion North Carolina in the ACC preseason coaches poll, released last week. … Virginia has a pair of Michigan ties, as first-year forward Gusick is a native of Livonia, Mich., while head coach Steve Swanson played collegiately at Michigan State.
