LAST WEEK: The Cavaliers’ game with in-state rival William & Mary was postponed, and has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 2. The last action the team saw was during the weekend of Sept. 7, when they hosted the Virginia Soccer Classic. The Cavaliers won their first game in the Classic with a 2-1 victory over West Virginia, and closed the weekend with a 1-0 loss to Auburn. Anne Abernethy made her first collegiate start in goal against West Virginia, making three saves and getting the win in her debut. She also started against Auburn, making six saves despite the loss. Laura Gaworecki, Lori Lindsey and Kelly Worden all earned spots on the All-Tournament team for the Virginia Soccer Classic. Lindsey scored her thid goal of the season on the team’s first shot against West Virginia, and later assisted on Alyssa Benitez’ game-winner. Gaworecki assisted on Lindsey’s goal.
THIS WEEK: The Cavaliers open conference play this week with a trip to Raleigh, N.C., to take on N.C. State on. Sept. 19. On Sept. 23, they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on Florida, their third matchup with an SEC team this season. Virginia is even in its series with the Wolfpack, 11-11-1. Virginia won last year’s meeting, 3-0. Virginia is 1-2 against Florida all-time, the lone win coming in 1999, the year following Florida’s National Championship.
PACK ‘EM AWAY: With the all-time series tied entering this season, Virginia looks to go up on its conference rival from Raleigh, N.C. The two teams met twice every season from 1986 to 1991 and twice in 1997 as well. After N.C. State won seven of the first nine meetings, UVa has come back to even the series by winning the last six meetings over the Wolfpack, outscoring them 17-4 over that span including a 3-0 shutout last year on Sept. 12, the home conference opener.

SEE YOU LATER, GATOR: This marks the fourth all-time meeting between Florida and Virginia, the third meeting in Gainesville. The Gators captured last year’s game at Klockner Stadium by a score of 3-2, while the Cavaliers defeated the then defending National Champs in Gainesville on Oct. 8, 1999, a 2-1 overtime victory, in which Lori Lindsey, as a second-year, netted the game-winning goal eight minutes into the overtime.
