CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team began the dual match portion of its 2001-2002 schedule by hosting the Lock Haven Bald Eagles and the George Mason Patriots this afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers dropped their first dual match to Lock Haven 29-12 before bouncing right back with a 38-6 victory over George Mason. Lock Haven defeated George Mason by the score of 43-0 in the third dual match of the afternoon.
Against Lock Haven, Virginia took an early 3-0 lead when UVa’s Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) earned a hard-fought 2-1 overtime decision over LHU’s Tim Boetsch in the heavyweight class. However, the Cavaliers early lead would be their only advantage in the dual as the Bald Eagles went on to win seven of the last nine bouts, including for consecutive matches following Etu’s victory, to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 20-3 lead.
Trailing 3-0, Lock Haven’s Trap McCormack posted a 22-6 technical fall victory over Virginia’s Byron Dunlap (York, Pa./Dallastown) at 125 to give the Bald Eagles their first lead at 5-3, a lead LHU would not relinquish. Lock Haven jumped ahead 11-3 when Chris Spealler pinned UVa’s Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) at 4:05 into the match at 133. After the Bald Eagles’ Mike Maney posted a 7-4 decision over the Cavaliers’ Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) at 141, LHU’s JaMarr Billman pinned UVa’s John Christopher (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) at 2:18 into the match in the 149 class to give Lock Haven a 20-3 lead.
The Cavaliers’ Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) trimmed UVa’s deficit to 20-6 after earning a 3-1 decision over Jason Gilligan at 157, however, the Bald Eagles won back-to-back matches at 165 and 174 to pull out to a 26-6 lead. Lock Haven’s Charlie Brenneman defeated Virginia’s Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) by the narrow score of 3-2 at 165 before LHU’s Ed Pawlak earned a 6-3 victory over UVa’s Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) at 174.
Virginia’s Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) won the Cavaliers’ third bout of the dual by pinning Lock Haven’s Mike Greenberg 3:45 into the match at 184 before LHU’s Jarred Dressler topped UVa’s Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Virginia Beach) by the score of 6-3 at 197 in the final match of the dual. Dressler’s victory gave Lock Haven a 29-12 victory.
Against George Mason, Virginia jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead after two bouts and never looked back. Etu got thing started for UVa with a 14-5 major decision victory over GMU’s Sandy Ailor in the heavyweight class to give the Cavaliers a 4-0 lead before Virginia’s Dunlap recorded a forfeit victory over the Patriots’ Aaron Suranofsky at 125.
George Mason’s Matt Hunckler cut the Patriots’ deficit to 10-3 after recording a 6-4 decision over Virginia’s Stewart at 133 before UVa’s Seidel topped GMU’s Rob Becker by the count of 6-4 in overtime at 141 to make it a 13-3 Cavalier lead.
The Patriots’ Adrian Austin gathered George Mason’s second and final win of the dual with a 3-0 decision over Paul Dunstan (Oberlin, Ohio/St. Edwards) at 149 to make the score 13-6, but it was all Virginia from that point on as the Cavaliers won five consecutive matches to close out the dual. After UVa’s Foley posted an 11-1 major decision over GMU’s Richard Appau at 157, Durkee gave the Cavaliers a 23-6 lead after pinning the Patriots’ Chad Scheidegger just as time expired in the first period (3:00) at 165. Following a forfeit win by Virginia’s Brian Muir at 174, UVa’s Massey posted a 9-7 decision over GMU’s John Davis at 184 to make it a 32-6 lead. The Cavaliers Andrew DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) collected a forfeit win at 197 to end the dual and give UVa a 38-6 victory.
With the split on the afternoon, Virginia’s record moves to 1-1 overall. The two losses drop George Mason’s record to 1-2 on the year, while Lock Haven improves to 9-1 overall. UVa will return to action on January 11-12 when UVa travels to Hampton, Virginia to competes in the 2002 Virginia Duals.
