Cavaliers Fall to Hokies at 2002 Virginia Duals, 21-18

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team dropped its second match of the day in the 2002 Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. The Cavaliers lost a hard-fought 21-18 decision to the Virginia Tech Hokies in the consolation bracket of the Virginia Duals. Virginia Tech jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after two bouts before UVa stormed back to win five of the next six matches to take a 18-15 lead with two bouts to go. However, the Hokies won the final two matches of the dual to turn their three-point deficit into a three-point victory.
Virginia Tech took its 9-0 lead after gathering victories at 141 and 149 before the Cavaliers made their run. Virginia’s Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) recorded a 12-3 major decision victory over Tech’s Mike Cox at 157 to cut the Hokies lead to 9-4. Following a 9-4 decision by Virginia’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) over Shaun Guttridge at 165 to make it a 9-7 contest, UVa took its first lead of the dual when Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) posted a 12-4 major decision win over Virginia Tech’s Tomas Ovalle at 174 to give the Cavaliers an 11-9 lead.
The Hokies regained the lead in the next match with a fall at 184 to give Tech a 15-9 lead. But Virginia won the next two bouts with Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) posting an 8-6 decision over Canaan Prater at 184 and Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) defeating Pete Pool with a 10-2 major decision in the heavyweight class to make it an 18-15 lead for UVa.
However, with two matches to go in the dual, Virginia Tech’s Dalton Head claimed a 5-2 decision at 125 to tie the score at 18-18 before the Hokies won the dual with David Hoffman’s 9-2 decision at 133.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 1-3 overall in dual match action, while the win improves Virginia Tech’s mark to 3-4 on the season.
