Virginia Baseball Defeats Bucknell 8-0, Sweeps Three-Game Weekend Series

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team recorded an 8-0 shutout over the visiting Bucknell Bison this afternoon at the UVa Baseball Stadium. With the shutout, the first of the year for the Cavaliers, UVa posted a three-game sweep over the Bison in the weekend series. Virginia also defeated Bucknell 10-3 and 7-5 on Saturday, February 16th.
The Cavaliers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Dan Street drove in the eventual game-winning run when he hit a RBI-single to center field to score teammate Shawn McCleary. Virginia added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull ahead 4-0 when Kyle Werman hit a RBI-single to right field to score Mike Priest before Mark Reynolds drove in Werman and David Stone with a two-run, RBI-double to left field.
After scoring another run in the four inning to make it a 5-0 contest, UVa scored two more runs in the sixth inning to open up a seven-run lead when Matt Street scored on a passed ball before McCleary drove in Werman with a RBI-single to left field. The Cavaliers scored their eighth and final run of the game when McCleary scored Rob Newton to give Virginia an 8-0 victory.
UVa’s winning pitcher Dan Street pitched a stellar game after going 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit and zero runs to go along with his game-high nine strikeouts. Reliever Joe Koshansky pitched 4.0 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits with two strikeouts. The Bison’s R.J. Grant pitched 4.0 innings and gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits with one strikeout in the loss.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 3-0 overall, while the loss drops Bucknell to 0-3 on the season. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, February 22-24 when UVa travels to Charleston, S.C. to compete in The Citadel Tournament. Bucknell will return to action on February 23-24 when the Bison head to Statesboro, Ga. to face Georgia Southern.
