Virginia Wrestling Defeats Maryland in ACC Dual Match, 18-16

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team hosted the Maryland Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference dual match at Memorial Gymnasium in the Cavaliers final home meet of the 2002 season. In front of a rowdy senior night crowd, Virginia pulled out a hard-fought 18-16 victory over Maryland.
UVa’s Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) began the action for the Cavaliers with a 5-4 victory in the heavyweight class over Maryland’s Jeremy Duncan, giving Virginia a 3-0 lead. In the next bout, UVa’s Byron Dunlap (York, Pa./Dallastown) recorded a 10-2 major decision victory over Mike Lupa at 125 to increase the Cavaliers lead to 7-0.
The Terrapins scored their first team points of the evening at 133 when Joe Guzzio defeated Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) by fall at :40. Maryland took their first lead of the night with a victory in the 141 weight class. Brandon York defeated Virginia’s Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) by a score of 4-2, making the team score 9-7.
The Cavaliers took a 10-9 lead on Paul Dunstan’s (Oberlin, Ohio/St. Edwards) 12-9 victory over Maryland’s Adam James in the 149 weight class. In the 157 weight class, Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) increased the Cavaliers’ lead to 12-9 with an 8-3 win over John Antonelli of the Terrapins.
Virginia’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) defeated Josh Weidman in the 165 weight class by a 4-2 score in overtime. In the 174 weight class, Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) defeated Maryland’s Mark Reid by a score of 7-4, to increase the Cavaliers’ lead to 18-9.
The Terrapins increased their team score with Jake Stork’s victory at 184 over UVa’s Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) by major decision, 10-1. In the 197 weight class, Bob Vorhies of Maryland defeated Andrew DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) in overtime, 5-3 to complete competition for the evening, making the team score 18-16.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 5-10 overall, 2-2 in the ACC. The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, February 24th when UVa competes in the 2002 American Quad Meet in Washington DC. Virginia joins the field of American, Eastern Michigan and Bucknell in the event. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
