The University of Virginia (3-1) went on an 8-0 run after allowing the first goal of the game to take charge and defeated the Richmond Spiders (1-2) 18-4 today in Richmond. Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) who finished with six goals and two assists, had three goals and an assist in that run while Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) added an assist followed by two goals to help in the offensive end. Co-captain Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) had four caused turnovers to lead the Cavaliers while Andrea Pfeiffer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) had six saves.
The Spiders got on the board first as Polly Purcell drove the crease from the left side to take a 1-0 lead 5:11 into the game. The Cavaliers were able to tie the game five minutes later as Aumiller converted a shooting space foul. Ashley Dodson won the next draw and in the Cavalier offense Amy Appelt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) fed Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) on the other side of the cage and Sambus scored, giving the Hoos a lead they would not relinquish.
Schummer stopped a Spider scoring threat as she caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball to start a transition that was completed as Banks fed Aumiller on the crease for a 3-0 lead with 14:08 to play, forcing the Spders to take a timeout. The Cavalier defense was also the catalyst for the next goal as Cary Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) caused a turnover on the Spider restraining line, breaking the clear. Banks picked up the loose ball and raced to the cage and scored, putting Virginia up 4-1. Banks also scored the next goal for the Cavaliers, who got the ball back deep in their defensive zone after a Spider was called for warding off. Aumiller got the ball and the Cavaliers worked the ball up to Banks, who rolled the crease and scored, putting the Hoos up by 4.
Chasney won the ensuing draw and was the recipient of an opposite post pass from Aumiller less than a minute later to give Virginia a five-goal lead with 9:38 to play in the half. A Richmond foul in the arc put Sambus to the line and she converted with 5:39 to play, giving the Cavaliers a 7-1 lead. After Virginia controlled the ensuing draw, Appelt was fouled as she drove to the cage and on the 8-meter, fed a wide-open Aumiller in the center of the arc. Aumiller’s goal, her third of the day, capped the 8-0 run for the Hoos.
Richmond got on the board less than a minute later as they won the draw and drove to the crease, but that was the last goal Pfeiffer would allow in the half. She made a save on the next Richmond shot and started a clear that founds its way to Appelt, who raced in from the top of the 12-meter fan and scored with 2:10 to play. With less than a minute to play in the half, the Cavalier offense was patient and with eight seconds to play Carol Hotarek (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) scooped up a loose ball in the arc and sent it into the cage, putting UVa in double digits just before the halftime break.
In the second half the Cavaliers notched the first four goals, as Chasney had two goals and an assist in the run. A Pfeiffer save on the first Richmond shot of the half started the Cavalier scoring opportunity, which was converted as Appelt fed Chasney on the other side of the crease and Chasney scored. A Schummer caused turnover started the play to give the Cavaliers a ten-goal lead as she sprinted the length of the field and dished the ball off to Chasney, who fed a wide-open Elizabeth Pinney (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) who had streaked in on the left side. Pinney’s goal with 20:14 to play gave UVa a 12-2 lead.
Three minutes later Pfeiffer controlled a loose ball in her crease and outletted the ball to Sambus, who sprinted up field and fed Aumiller, who was wide open on the crease and converted, giving Virginia a 13-2 lead with just over 17 minutes to play. A Dodson draw control gave the Cavaliers possession, and with it Chasney completed her hat trick as she took a pass from Aumiller and converted it with 15:38 to play. The Spiders answered with a a goal from Libby Berlacher, but the Cavaliers answered three minutes later as Sambus knocked down a pass in the Richmond backfield and got the ball to Chasney, who fed Aumiller who was again wide open on the crease.
Lindsay Buchanan (Baltimore, Md./Towson) caused a turnover in the Cavalier defense and started the transition that brought the ball to the offensive end where Pinney fed Appelt, whose goal with 7:20 to play made the score 16-3 in favor of Virginia. Pinney won the next draw and got the ball to Molly Cangemi (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep), who fed Lauren Keller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) for the Cavaliers’ 17th goal. A foul put Aumiller back on the 8-meter for a final free position attempt, and Aumiller converted it for her sixth goal of the game and an 18-3 lead. Liz McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Taft) went into the game in place of Pfeiffer, and McCarthy made two saves, including one on a 2v0 breakaway, while allowing just one goal for the final score of 18-4.
The eighth-ranked Cavaliers travel to fifth-ranked Maryland on Tuesday to face the Terps at 7pm.
