Virginia first-year Elizabeth Pinney (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) was honored by Insidelacrosse.com for her outstanding play last week. Pinney was named an honorable mention selection for Player of the Week honors as the Cavaliers went 2-1 on the road with victories over then-#6 Maryland and #12 Penn State before falling to then-#3 Princeton on Sunday. Against Penn State, Pinney shut down the Nittany Lions’ and the American Lacrosse Conference’s leading scorer, Katie Jeschke, allowing her only one shot.
Pinney has started all seven games for the Cavaliers, who moved up to #6 in the IWLCA rankings this week. The Hoos will face #3 UNC on Saturday, March 23 at 12:00 noon. Carolina is 2-0 in the ACC and has defeated the Cavaliers in six of the last eight meetings, with the UVa wins coming in the ACC tournaments in 1997 (semifinal) and 1998 (final).
