Charlottesville, Va. – The UVa women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at home against No. 4 Duke, but did receive a strong effort from Henriette Williams at No. 1 singles.
“Henriette fought hard for a tremendous victory and I think we’re all proud of her play today,” head coach Phil Rogers said after the match. “We’re also pleased that Christine Kim, Elizabeth Hornberger and Logan Smith were able to move into the lineup and compete this weekend to fill in for Dora Bechliwanis and Marta Bechliwanis, who are out due to illness.”
Rogers also commented that it is sad to see seniors Amy O’Donnell and Christine Kim playing in the final home matches of their career. With three regular season matches remaining in their careers, O’Donnell stands with 68 victories, while Kim has 35. The two have teamed in doubles as well, and are 5-7 so far this season.
Williams came back after losing the second set of her match with the No. 3 player in the nation, Kelly McCain. She won a hard-fought third set, claiming the breaker, and winning the set 7-6. McCain was 25-5 entering her match with Williams. Williams improves to 9-8 on the year, and is 2-3 in ACC matches this spring.
The loss to Duke is the Cavaliers’ final home match of the 2002 season. UVa returns to action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Maryland for a 2:30 p.m. match with the Terrapins. They have two more regular season matches following, as they travel to N.C. State on April 13 and Wake Forest on April 14, before competing in the ACC Championships on April 18-21.
