Lori Lindsey And Conor Gill Honored As UVa's Top Athletes

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Lori Lindsey (women’s soccer) and Conor Gill (men’s lacrosse) were honored as the University of Virginia’s top female and male athletes for the 2001-02 academic year at Virginia’s annual awards dinner Wednesday (May 1) at University Hall. Lindsey received the IMP Award as the top female athlete and Gill received the WINA Award as the top male athlete.
Lindsey, a senior from Indianapolis, Ind., was the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year each of the last two years. She earned All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the second time last fall and is a four-time All-ACC selection. She scored 11 goals and had four assists during the 2001 season when she earned first-team All-ACC Tournament honors and was the Virginia Sports Information Director’s Association (VaSID) Women’s Soccer Player of the Year in the state of Virginia.
Lindsey was a finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club, the Hermann and the SoccerBuzz Player of the Year Awards last season. She was selected by the San Diego Spirit with the fourth overall selection in the 2002 Women’s United Soccer Association’s annual draft.
Lindsey started 85 of the 86 games she played in during her Virginia career and scored 33 career goals. She was also a starting midfielder for the United States’ Under-21 Team that won the World Championship (Nordic Cup) in Norway in August of 2001.
Gill, a senior from Lutherville, Md., is a two-time first-team All-America selection and a three-time All-ACC selection. He leads the ACC in assists this spring for the third year in a row and ranks in UVa’s Top Five in career assists. He is also in Virginia’s Top Five in career points and is a two-time team captain. In 1999, he was the first freshman named Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Tournament.
Naomi Perkins, a member of the athletic department’s business office staff, received the Bus Male Service Award for her years of service to Virginia athletics.
Mark Koontz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) of the men’s lacrosse team, Megan Roesch (Columbia, Md.) of the women’s swimming and diving team, and David Stone (Frederick, Md.) of the baseball team received Virginia’s ACC Scholar-Athlete Awards. Stone also received the Gus Tebell Memorial Award as the senior male student-athlete with the highest scholastic average through his four years at Virginia. Caitlin Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.) of the women’s swimming and diving team received the Jettie Hill Memorial Award as the senior female student-athlete with the highest scholastic average through her four years at UVa.
Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md.) of the women’s lacrosse team and Jenny Sherman (Needham, Mass.) of the women’s rowing team were recipients of the Craig Fielder Award for overcoming adversity, and Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md.) of the women’s lacrosse team received the Ralph Sampson Scholarship Award. Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif.) of the softball team received the Virginia Athletic Department’s Distinguished Student-Athlete Scholarship Award and Butch Jefferson (Forest, Va.) of the football team received the Ernest H. Ern, Jr. Award for outstanding contributions to student life at Virginia.
Dustin Durrance of the men’s basketball team was the recipient of the Bob Goodman Memorial Award for his service to Virginia athletics as a team manager and Blair Putnam (women’s rowing, wrestling, softball) received the Tim Abbott Memorial Award presented to the assistant athletic trainer most dedicated to and possessing empathy for the student-athletes. Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn.) of the men’s soccer team was the recipient of the Susan J. Grossman Memorial Award in recognition of outstanding service to student-athletes and contributions to the Student Athlete Mentor Program.
Virginia’s ACC Top VI Award recipients included Caitlin Anderson (women’s swimming and diving), Jonathan Chou (men’s tennis, Newport News, Va.), Anna Crosswhite (women’s basketball, Castlecrag, Australia), Jen Gardner (women’s cross country/track and field, Falls Church, Va.), Ryan Gibbs (men’s soccer, West Chester, Pa.) and Jared Woodson (football, North Garden, Va.).
