Two Virginia Cavaliers won titles at the JMU Invitational while other set season-best marks at today’s competition in Harrisonburg, Va. Kiamesha Otey won the long jump with a leap of 6.44m while Scott Kimball took the title in the 100-meter dash, running a 10.64. Otey was also the runner-up in the 100-meter dash, running 11.77 while teammate Caroline Harvey took 6th in that event, running a 12.36. The men’s 4x100m team was also victorious in competition today. Three distance runners set Virginia season bests today as Pat Slattery ran the steeplechase in 9:13.78, good enough for the bronze, and Melanie Matthews took runner-up honors in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:38.19. Matthews finished just behind current Cavalier assistant coach Dana Coons. Will Christian ran the 3K in a Virginia season-best time of 8:31.49, which earned him fourth overall. Jason Young also set a school season-best time in the 400m with a time of 48.52.
Other medalists for the Cavaliers for the women included Curtrell Frye, who led a 3-4-5 run in the high jump with teammates Loni Miller and Natalie Randolph. Eliese Mitchell and Inhar Chong went 2-3 respectively in both the hammer throw and the discus, and Annie Bobiak was the runner up in the javelin, tossing the implement 39.16m. Annica White tied the Virginia season-best in the pole vault with a leap of 3.50m, which took 6th in today’s competition.
Tim Bilmanis was also a medallist today, taking the bronze in the discus with a throw of 47.00m. Jeff Binggeli finished just behind Slattery in the steeple, running 9:17.29 to take fifth, and Mike Riso jumped 2.01m in the high jump to earn fourth place. Kimball also finished fifth in the 200m dash to go along with his title in the 100m dash.
