Cavaliers Take Titles at ECAC/IC4A Championships

The University of Virginia women’s track and field team stands in first place at the ECAC Championships after three days with the finals slated for Sunday, May 19. Virginia leads second-place Rutger s by a score of 41 to 27 with Syracuse in th ird with 25 points. Virginia’s Jane Maxwell won the ECAC 10,000m title to lead the Cavaliers. Maxwell’s time of 35:22.19 outpaced the second place finisher by 15 seconds and is the fastest time for the Cavaliers this season. Teamma te Melanie Matthews, who has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the steeplechase and the 5K, took the bronze in the steeplechase with a run of 10:25.86. On the men’s side, Shay Clark qualified for the fi nals in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes while Jarrett Hagwood had the top qualifying time in the 110m hurdles going into Sunday’s finals.

Kiamesha Otey took runner-up honors in the long jump with a leap of 6.28m. Her teammate Caroline Harvey took eighth in the same event, jumping 5.79m. Eliese Mitchell scored in both the discus and hammer, taking second in t he discus and fifth in the hammer. Dawn Cleary also scored for the Caval iers, taking 8th in the 5K with a time of 16:44.16, the fastes t time for Virginia this season and a provisional mark in that event. Teammates Ashley Seaton (17:26.99) and Meg McGarvey (17:35.53) also ran the 5K. Curtrell Frye took sixth in the heptathlon fo r Virginia, scoring 4567 .

Kim Turko and Naccole Guinn bot h qualified for the finals in the 100 hurdles. On the men’s side, the 4x100m team took h ome third. Pat Slattery ran 9:15.36 in the steeplechase. Full Virginia results listed below:
