Virginia head track and field coach Randy Bungard has announced the addition of 19 student-athletes to the Virginia track and field squad for the 2002-03 season. “I’m very excited about this class,” comments Bungard. “We have a wide range of kids covering many event areas. This class has a very strong ‘Virginia’ flavor. Traditionally, Virginia has been one of the top five states in the nation for high school track and field. I’m pleased that we were able to keep some of our best kids in the state. Keeping Virginia’s good student-athletes in state has always been a goal of mine since arriving at Virginia, and I think this class is exemplary of that goal.
Walker Anderson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster School) Anderson was the runner-up in the shot put at the Georgia state meet in 2002 . He qualified for both the adidas outdoor championships as well as the USATF junior national meet.PRs: Shot: 61′ 9″ Discus: 160′ 3″ Hammer: 164′ 0″ Weight: 67′ 0″”
Isi Azeke (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) Azeke was the bronze medalist in the 110 hurdles in 2002 at the AAA state meet.PRs: 55m hurdles: 7.77; 110 hurdles: 14.43; 300 hurdles: 37.76; long jump: 21′ 9/75″
Devin Canaday (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) Canaday was the Virginia state champion (AA) in the 55m hurdles in 2002 before finishing second in the 300 intermediate hurdles and third in the 110 high hurdles in the 2002 outdoor meet.PRs: 55m: 6.57; 55m hurdles: 7.67; 110 hurdles: 14.78; 300 hurdles: 39.17; long jump: 21′ 9/75″
Kevin Carson (Pennington Gap, Va./R. E. Lee) Carson was the runner-up at the Virginia AA state meet in the 55m dash in 2001.PRs: 55m: 6.54; 100m: 10.89; 200m: 22.31m; 300m: 36.69;
Daniel Garrett (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) Garrett, an All-American in the pole vault, was the runner-up in the Virginia state meet (indoors and outdoors) and finished fifth at the adidas outdoor meet in 2002.PR: 15′ 9″
Ashley Gore (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) Gore was the 2002 Virginia AA state champion in the 500m run and is ranked fifth nationally at that distance in 2002.PR: 400m: 58:13; 500m: 1:15.53
Matt Gutridge (Ruther Glen, Va./Caroline Senior High School) Gutridge was an All-State selection in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. He was the runner-up at the Virginia AA state meet in the 3200m run in 2001 and finished third in the same event in 2002.PRs: 1600m: 4:21; 3200m: 9:22.21
Emily Hampson (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter) Hampson was the New England Prep School champion in both the 1500m and 3000m runs in 2000 and was an All-State and All-New England selection all four years in cross country.PRs: 800: 2:17; 1500m: 4:35; 3000m: 10:07; 3-Mile XC: 17:19
Alicia LaRoche (Centreville, Va./Centreville) LaRoche is a two-time state champion in the pole vault and was fifth at the adidas outdoor meet in 2002. She has finished in the top four at the state meet in each of the last three years.PR: PV: 11′ 7″
Mike Lyng (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) Lyng was the runner-up in the Virginia AAA 3200m run in 2002, earning him his sixth All-State honor.PRs: 1600m: 4:28; 3200m: 9:31.11
Rachel Marks (Derby, N.Y./Lakeshore Central) Marks was the 2001 New York state champion in the high jump and finished ninth at the adidas outdoor meet in 2002.PR: HJ: 5′ 7″
Kevin McHale (Burke, Va./Robinson) McHale earned All-State honors in indoor track while being named All-District in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.PRs: 1600m: 4:19.86; 3200m: 9:50
Delaney Moje (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) Moje was a two-time AA state champion in the 1600m and completed her high school career with 12 All-State selections, being so named in each of her four years in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track. John Piersol (Richmond, Va./Maggie Walker Governor’s School) Piersol was the runner-up in the 3200m run at the Virginia AAA indoor state meet in 2002 and was a four-time All-State selection.PRs: 800: 1:59; 1600m: 4:19.08; 3200m: 9:05.82
Kara Scanlin (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal High) A two-time Footlocker finalist, Scanlin was an All-American in cross country in 2001 and holds the cross country and 3200m state records for Florida. A six-time state champion, Scanlin won the 1600m, 3200m, and cross country titles in both her junior and senior seasons. In 2002 Scanlin was a high school All-American in the two-mile run and was the national runner-up in the adidas outdoor two-mile run.PRs: 800: 2:17; Mile: 4:55.28; 2 Mile: 10:27.25
Briana Smith (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) Smith took fourth at the state outdoor meet in the 100m hurdles.PR: 100 hurdles: 14.59
David Sullivan (Clifton, Va./Centreville) Sullivan was the Penn Relays champion in the pole vault in 2002, as well as Virginia state champion for 2002 both indoors and outdoors.
