Virginia Men's Swimming Falls To Tennessee, 143-98

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 11th-ranked University of Virginia men’s swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season as fourth-ranked Tennessee posted a 143-98 victory over the Cavaliers Friday (January 11) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. With the loss, UVa falls to 3-1 on the season, while the Volunteers improve to 4-0 on the season.
Second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) and first-year Michael Raab (Rockville, M.d./Walter Johnson) were the only individual event winners for the Cavaliers. Anderson won the 100 freestyle with a NCAA “B” qualifying time of 44.74 seconds, while Raab dominated the field in the 200 butterfly, posting a winning time of 1:48.25. Virginia also won the 400 freestyle relay with Anderson anchoring the relay. Second-years Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School), Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) and Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) swam the other legs on the relay that clocked a winning time of 3:01.80. Wagner also finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:47.01. Other second-place finishes were turned in by third-years Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) and Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) and second-year Ian Prichard (Ventura, Calif./Buena). DeMarco was second in the 1000 free (9:16.10), as was Yimsomruay in the 200 individual medley (1:50.15). Prichard swam a time of 4:28.75 in the 500 free, only one one-hundredth of a second off the winning time.
Tennessee won 10 events with Phillip Jones, Brett Tannhauser and Andrew Bree each winning a pair of events. Jones dominated the one and three-meter diving competitions and set a pool record in winning the one-meter board with a score of 340.73 points. He took the three-meter competition with 350.85 points. Tannhauser came from behind to win the 200 and 500 freestyles. He posted a winning time of 1:39.26 in taking the 200, then out-touched Prichard in winning the 500 free by one one-hundredth of a second in 4:28.74. Bree took the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:59.17 and also won the 200 individual medley in 1:49.21.
Other individual event winners for the Volunteers included Renato Gueraldi in the 50 free (20.28), George du Rand in the 1000 free (9:10.32) and Paulo Machado in the 200 back (1:46.63). Tennessee also won the 400 medley relay with Machado, Chris Stewart, Justin Hoggatt and Matt Parrish swimming legs on the relay that posted a time of 3:21.56.
In a separate exhibition meet, former UVa swimmer Ed Moses swam the second fastest American times in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. Moses set an AFC pool record in the 100 breast with a time of 52.12. He clocked a time of 1:53.38 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (January 12) when both the men’s and women’s squads host N.C. State at 1:00 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The one-meter diving competition will begin at 11:45 a.m.
