GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia first-year swimmer Francis Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week. Crippen won a pair of events and set a UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center record in his first collegiate meet. He helped UVa defeat South Carolina 129-109 in the Cavaliers’ season-opener on October 26.
In his first collegiate race, Crippen set the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center pool record in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 8:59.53. His time is the second fastest in school history and just 41 hundredths of a second shy of the school record of 8:59.12 set by current Cavalier Ian Prichard in 2001. Crippen won the 1000 free by more than 20 seconds. He also won the 500 free with a time of 4:26.45, more than six seconds faster than the runner-up.
