Virginia Wrestling Falls to Virginia Tech, 21-19

The University of Virginia wrestling team lost to the Virginia Tech Hokies this afternoon by a score of 21-19. Despite taking six of the day’s ten matches, the Hokies outscored the Cavaliers in team scoring.
The Hokies built an early 9-0 lead, taking the first two matches of the day. Tech’s Scott Justus defeated UVa’s Steve Mazzola (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) in the 184 weight class by fall at 2:23. The Cavaliers’ Andrew DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) fell to Canaan Prater of the Hokies by a score of 9-3 in the 197 weight class.
UVa responded by taking the next two matches, as HWT Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) defeated Pete Pool of Tech by a score of 10-3. At 125, Byron Dunlap (York, Pa./Dallastown) came away with a 9-4 decision against Tech’s Geoff Head, bringing the team score to 9-6.
David Hoffman of Tech pinned UVa’s Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) at 2:06 in the 133 weight class to create a 15-6 lead for the Hokies. At 141, Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) of the Cavaliers fell to Sean Gray of the Hokies by fall at 2:03, increasing Tech’s lead to 21-6.
The Cavaliers next posted four consecutive victories, beginning with Paul Dunstan’s (Oberlin, Ohio/St. Edwards) overtime victory over Reed Carpenter, 3-3. in the 149 weight class. Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) of Virginia defeated Mike Cox of the Hokies at 157 to make the team score 21-12.
Virginia’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) posted a major decision victory over Jerome Villanueva of Tech at 165, giving Virginia three more team points, making the team score 21-16. In the 174 weight class, Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Acd.) of the Cavaliers completed the day’s competition with a victory over Tomas Ovalle, 8-4.
Despite their four consecutive match victories to close out the day, the Cavaliers could not overcome Tech’s lead in team scoring. With the loss, Virginia drops to 3-9 overall and remains 0-1 in the conference.
Virginia will return to action on Saturday, February 16th when the Cavaliers travel to Durham, N.C. to face the Duke Blue Devils in a dual match. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
