Men's Golf Stands 12th at Puerto Rico Classic

PALMER, PUERTO RICO – The University of Virginia men’s golf team stands tied for 12th place after the first 18 holes of the Puerto Rico Classic, held Sunday at the Rio Mar River Course in Palmer, P.R.
ACC rival Georgia Tech paces the field of 15 with a 13-under day at 275, while Clemson follows at nine-under with a 279. Virginia is tied with Northwestern at 12th with a 299 (+11).
Individually, Georgia Tech’s Kris Mikkelsen shot a five-under par to lead the field with a 67. Clemson’s Ben Duncan shot a 68 to follow by one strokes.
For the Cavs, junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) fired a 71 (-1), while senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) shot a 73 (+1) in the opening round.
“It’s not a great start for our team,” head coach Mike Moraghan said. “Justin and Steve played pretty well. We need to play well tomorrow as we’re only 10 shots out of third place.”
Play continues at the Puerto Rico Classic on Monday with a 8.m. shot gun start.
