Virginia Swimming Teams Split Final Dual Meet With Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 12th-ranked Virginia men’s swimming and diving team closed out its dual meet season with an impressive 199-96 victory over Maryland Saturday (February 9) at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. The Terrapin women handed 12th-ranked UVa its first loss of the season by posting a 179-121 win over the Cavaliers. The Virginia men improve to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Cavalier women fall to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. The Maryland men fall to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the ACC, while the Terrapin women now stand at 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.
The Virginia men won 13 of 16 events with 11 Cavaliers winning events in topping the Terrapins 199-96. Second-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) won a pair of individual events and also swam a leg on a winning relay. Anderson won the 100 free in 44.97 and posted an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 1:39.49 in winning the 200 free. Anderson swam the breaststroke leg on UVa’s winning 200 medley relay (1:32.00). He also swam a leg on the Cavaliers’ 400 free relay team that exhibitioned the event with a top time of 3:03.68. First-year Chad Barlow (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy), second-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) and third-year Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown Academy) joined Anderson on UVa’s winning 200 medley relay. Kerpelman also won the 50 free with a time of 20.86 seconds, while Yimsomruay grabbed to top spot in the 200 individual medley in 1:49.39.
Second-year Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) clocked an NCAA “B” time of 1:46.64 to win the 200 backstroke, while first-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) won the 200 butterfly with an NCAA “B” time of 1:47.05. The Cavaliers won 500 and 1000 freestyles with first-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) taking the 500 free (4:32.63) and third-year Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) winning the 1000 free (9:23.48). Other individual winners for UVa included third-year Jon Baird (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) in the 100 breast (56.88), second-year Gary Marshall (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) in the 200 breast (2:02.05), third-year Brian Best (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) in the 100 butterfly (49.24), and second-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) in the three-meter diving (504.44 points).
The Cavalier women won just three of 16 events in their 179-121 loss to Maryland. Third-year Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) won a pair of events while third-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) won one event. Bosevska won the 200 butterfly with a season-best and NCAA “B” qualifying time of 2:00.66. Lane was second to Bosevska in the 200 fly with another NCAA “B” time of 2:01.47. Bosevska also won the 200 individual medley in 2:04.13 and was also second in the 200 back (2:05.18). Lane broke her own pool record in the 1000 free with a time of 9:46.89. She was also second in the 500 free with an NCAA “B” time of 4:51.57.
First-year Coco Buck (Herndon, Va./Herndon) earned second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with season-best times of 1:05.28 and 2:19.24, respectively. Third-year Alison Sharp (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) was second in the two diving events with 455.91 points on the three-meter board and 258.52 in the one-meter competition. First-year Laura Lipskis (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) posted a season-best time of 1:50.75 in finishing second in the 200 free. Her time also bettered the NCAA “B” standard.
The UVa women are next in action at the 2002 ACC Championships February 21-23 at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park, Md. Prelims begin each day at 11:00 a.m. with finals commencing at 7:00 p.m.
