Virginia Wrestling Falls to James Madison, 22-19

The University of Virginia wrestling team lost to the James Madison Dukes this afternoon, by a score of 22-19. Both teams garnered five victories apiece, yet with consecutive victories by fall in the 133 and 141 weight classes, JMU tallied more team points.

James Madison jumped out to an early lead when Dave Colabella defeated Steve Mazzola (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) in a 11-0 major decision victory in the 184 weight class. The Dukes followed up at 197 with another victory, as Steve Kodish defeated Andrew DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) by a score of 8-2, making the team score 7-0.

UVa won its first match when Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) won by major decision, 15-3, over JMU’s Chris Miller in the heavyweight class. The Cavaliers won their second match of the day at 125, with Byron Dunlap (York, Pa./Dallastown) defeating Todd Schroeder, bringing the team score to an even 7-7.

JMU won the next two weight classes by fall, as Mark Minuto pinned Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) at 2:53 at 133 and Pat Diaz pinned Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) at 3:56 in the 141 weight class, giving the Dukes a 19-7 lead.

The Cavaliers rallied to win their next two matches, with Paul Dunstan (Oberlin, Ohio/St. Edwards) winning over John Pagnotta in 149 by a score of 8-5. At 157, Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) defeated James Madison’s Ryan Loro, 11-7, making the team score 13-19.

In the 165 weight class, UVa’s Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) fell to Seth Cameron, 5-3. The Cavaliers’ Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Acd.) completed competition with a win over Steve Broglie of the Dukes, by fall at 6:10 in the 174 weight class.

The loss drops UVa to 3-8 overall, and they remain 0-1 in the conference.

Virginia will return to home action on Sunday, February 10th when the Cavaliers face the Virginia Tech Hokies in a dual match. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be held at Memorial Gymnasium.
