HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – The University of Virginia men’s golf team tied for third at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic after 36 holes at the Birkdale Golf Course. Sunday’s final 18 holes were canceled due to weather conditions.

ACC rival and No. 3 nationally ranked Wake Forest paced the field of 18 with six-under 570. Missouri followed by two strokes to take second with a 572 (-4). The Cavaliers and Georgia Southern tied for third with a 574 (-2) each.

Individually, Wake Forest’s Bill Haas fired a six-under 138 to capture medalist honors. UVa senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) and Old Dominion’s Geoffrey Harris were one stroke behind with a 139 (-5) each to tie for second. Missouri’s Mark McBride was fourth with a 140 (-4).

Junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot a two-under 142 to tie for 10th place, while sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) tied for 16th with a 144 (E). Sophomore Kevin O’Connell (Potomac, Md.) followed with a 149 (+5), while senior Shep Nowlin (Lynchburg, Va.) finished 91st with a 163.

“We had a great performance from our team, especially in the second round,” head coach Mike Moraghan said. “Everyone played well.”

Virginia heads to the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C., on March 22-24.
