Golf Leads Wofford Invite After the First Round

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite rainy conditions, the University of Virginia men’s golf team jumped out to a seven-stroke lead to pace the field of 12 teams after the first round at the Wofford Invitational on Friday at the Carolina Country Club.
The Cavaliers carded a two-under 286. UNC-Wilmington stands second with a 293 (+5), while East Carolina follows by four strokes with a 197 (+9).
Individually, UVa senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) fired a six-under 66 in the first round to lead all players. East Carolina’s Adam Howell follows by two strokes with a 68 (-4), while four players are tied for third with a 70 (-2).
All six Cavalier players stand in the Top 20 finishes. Following Marino’s tourney leading performance, sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) shot an even 72 to tie for ninth. Junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) follows by one stroke with a 73 to tie for 13th (+1). Senior Shivin Kwatra (New Delhi, India), junior Thomas Lee (Guttenburg, N.J.), and freshman Scott McMahon (Austin, Texas), who’s playing as an individual, each fired a 75 (+3) to tie at 18th.
Friday’s second round action was rain delayed.
The final 18 holes of the Wofford Invitational will be played on Saturday, April 13. Tee times begin at 8 a.m.
