SPARTANBURG, S.C – The University of Virginia men’s golf team finished first of 12 teams on Saturday at the Wofford Invitational at the Carolina Country Club.
The Cavaliers carded a two-under 862. East Carolina University placed second with a 863 (-1), while UNC-Wilmington dropped to third with a 872 (+8).
Individually, UVa senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) captured medalist honors for the second time in his career with a nine-under 207. Tied with ECU entering the final hole, Marino birdied the final hole to finish with a career-low 65 while pacing UVa to the title. Old Dominion’s Chris Piercy followed by four strokes with a 211 (-5). Kirk Satterfield of Furman finished closely in third with a 212 (-4).
“What a great win for us,” said Virginia head coach Mike Moraghan, “and just fantastic play by Steve Marino. He played like an All-American this week.”
Four Cavalier players landed in the Top 25 finishes. Following Marino’s tourney lead performance, sophomore Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) and junior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot an even 216 to tie for sixth. Freshman Scott McMahon (Austin, Texas), who played as an individual, fired a 221 (+5) to tie two others at 23rd. Senior Shivin Kwatra (New Delhi, India), tied 3 other golfers for the 29th position with a 228 (+12). Junior Thomas Lee (Guttenburg, N.J.) finished 44th with a 229 (+13).
The Virginia “B” Team will play in the Rehoboth Beach Invitational on Monday, April 15. The Cavaliers return to varsity action at next weekend’s ACC Championship in New London, N.C.
