GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia senior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va.) has been named to the 2002 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Team, ACC officials announced on Friday.
The team captain has started every tournament during his Cavalier career. Currently ranked No. 29 nationally by Golfweek, Marino captured medalist honors for the second time in his career at the Wofford Invitational. He birdied the final hole to give UVa the team title while shooting a nine-under 207, including a career-low 65 in the round. Marino was the top UVa finisher at the 2002 ACC Championship, placing eighth overall with a six-under 210. He was named team MVP at UVa’s 2002 All-Sports Banquet.
Last fall Marino finished second at the Mason Rudolph after firing a spectacular 68-67-65-200 (-10) to set the school record for 54 holes. He shot a career-low 65 in the final round.
Marino will lead Virginia at the 2002 NCAA East Regional on May 16-18 at the Ansley Golf Club’s Settin’ Down Creek in Roswell, Ga. Hosted by Georgia Tech, the 54-hole tourney features 27 teams and six individuals. The low 10 teams and the low two individuals not on those teams will advance to 2002 NCAA Championship on May 29-June 1 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
