J.C. Mathis Leaving Virginia Basketball Program

CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen announced Wednesday (May 15) that J.C. Mathis is leaving the Virginia program. Mathis has asked for and will receive his immediate release.

“I sincerely appreciate J.C. Mathis’ contributions to our basketball program the past two years,” Gillen said. “I wish him much success in his future endeavors.”

Mathis, a 6-8 forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., has lettered for the Cavaliers each of the last two seasons. He played in 28 games for Virginia during the 2001-02 season, starting 20, and averaged 4.9 points and 4.0 rebounds a game. He also had 21 assists and blocked 15 shots.

He led the team with career high totals of 20 points and 15 rebounds in a 93-59 victory over VMI at University Hall on January 24. He also scored 16 points and had five rebounds in a 76-68 home win over Rutgers on December 23.

As a freshman during the 2000-01 season, Mathis averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds a game.
