CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia men’s tennis player Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) was named the ACC Player of the Week Monday by league officials. A first-year member of the team, Stewart led the No. 52 Cavaliers to a 5-2 win over No. 68 Old Dominion last week.
In that match, Stewart and doubles partner Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the Cavaliers started strong with their upset of Zoltan Csanadi and Izak van der Merwe, the nation’s fourth ranked doubles team. In singles play, Stewart defeated the No. 94 ranked van der Merwe in straight sets at No. 1 singles.
Stewart is now 8-1 in dual matches at No. 1 singles and 14-4 overall. Stewart and Duquette are 7-2 in doubles play. Stewart has lead the Cavaliers to a 9-1 record this season, tying the 2000 squad for the best start in school history.
The No. 52 Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday as they begin their spring break trip in California with a match at No. 74 UC-Irvine. Virginia returns home on March 15 at the Snyder Tennis Center with a doubleheader against No. 33 Georgia Tech and UMBC.
