Cavaliers Take Titles at 49ers Classic

The University of Virginia’s Brian Kollar and Sharon O’Connor both won their season opening events today at the 49ers Classic Track and Field meet held at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Kollar, an All-American in the javelin, won that event today with a throw of 67.25m. Sharon O’Connor also won today, taking the gold in the 1500m race in a time of 4:26.60.

Virginia fared well in the long jump as three Cavaliers finished in the top 8. Trumaine Pendleton took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.95m, and Curtrell Frye took fifth among the women with a leap of 5.49m, just past teammate Ingrid Marable, who was seventh with a jump of 5.35m. Inhar Chong took seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.17m, while McGavock Dunbar took seventh in the 1500m run with a time of 3:55.64.

The Cavaliers’ Scott Kimball qualified for the 200m finals, to be run on Saturday. Carielle Doe qualified for the finals of both the 100m and 200m dashes. She will be joined in the 100m final by teammate Caroline Harvey. Virginia placed three women in the hurdle finals, as Frye qualified in the short hurdles along with Briana Smith, while Natalie Randolph advanced in the 400IH with a 1:02.82.
