CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team recorded its13th consecutive home victory after posting a 6-0 shutout win over theMaryland Terrapins in the first contest of a three-game Atlantic CoastConference series at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. TheCavaliers’ Jeff Kamrath pitched a complete game shutout and Virginia’s JoeKoshansky went 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the UVa offense in the win.Virginia is now a perfect 13-0 at home this season.
UVa took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Matt Streetstarted Virginia off with a double down the left field line before he scoredthe game’s first run two batters later on a RBI-single to left field by MarkReynolds. Street’s run was the eventual game-winner.
The Cavaliers extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inningwhen Koshansky singled and then scored a run on a Terrapin throwing. UVa’sRyan Zimmerman reached base on a fielder’s choice before crossing the platehimself on a RBI sacrifice fly by Kyle Werman.
UVa pushed its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning starting with atwo-run, RBI-single through the left side by Chris Sweet to drive inKoshansky and Zimmerman. Sweet scored a run himself two batters later on aRBI ground out by Paul Gillispie to make the score 6-0.
UVa starting pitcher Jeff Kamrath (3-1) picked up his third victory of theseason after pitching a complete game shutout, going 9.0 innings and strikingout a game-high 11 batters while allowing only four hits. For Kamrath, itwas his second career complete game shutout after also recording a completegame shutout on April 5th, 2002 against the same Maryland Terrapins.
The Terrapins’ starting pitcher Chris Clem (1-4) took the loss after going5.0 innings and surrendered six runs (four earned) on six hits with threestrikeouts.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 16-8 overall, 4-3 in the ACC. The loss drops Maryland’s record to 6-16 overall, 0-7 in the conference.
The Cavaliers and Terrapins will return to action on Saturday, March 29thwhen Virginia and Maryland play the second contest of the three-game ACCseries. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
