REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The University of Virginia women’s rowing team lost three races to the University of California-Berkeley on Sunday (March 30) on the final day of the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic. On Saturday (March 29), the Cavaliers won two of three races against the University of Southern California after winning two of three races against Stanford.
California won the varsity eight, the second varsity eight and the varsity four races against Virginia. UVa defeated Southern California in the second varsity eight and the varsity four races, but lost in the varsity eight.
Under sunny skies with calm waters on Sunday, California won the varsity eight race with a time of 6:31.3 and UVa finished with a time of 6:34.6. The Virginia crew charged hard in the final 500-meter stretch, but couldn’t overtake the California crew.
With a stiff headwind on Saturday, Southern California’s varsity eight pulled away in the final 1000 meters to defeat the Cavaliers. Southern California finished with a time of 6:49.2 and UVa had a time of 6:56.2.
The Cavaliers’ varsity eight crew was comprised of coxswain Betty Shumaker, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer, Beth Clark, Lindsay Shoop, Molly Baker, Julie McQueen, Jen Reck, Tammy Clark and Carolyn McMillan.
California’s second varsity eight crew rowed strongly away from the line and moved out slowly over the course to defeat Virginia. California finished with a time of 6:44.3 and UVa’s time was 6:51.1.
Virginia’s second varsity eight rowed straight away from Southern California and won with a time of 7:15.8. Southern California finished with a time of 7:27.8.
The Cavaliers’ second varsity eight was made up of coxswain Danielle Sewell, Crystal MacLeod, Margaret Matia, Kelley Jesnig, Mary Dobmeier, Katie Yrazabal, Claudia Durkin, Amanda Kennedy and Catelyn Coyle.
California’s varsity four crew pulled away after the first 500 meters to defeat Virginia.
UVa’s varsity four had a blistering start against Southern California and went on to a convincing victory in that race. The Cavaliers finished with a time of 8:09.2 and Southern California had a time of 8:43.9.
Virginia’s varsity four crew was comprised of coxswain Launa Forehand, Jessie Haury, Andrea Czarkowski, Julie Creighton and Kelley Dougherty.
The Virginia women’s rowing team returns to action on Sunday (April 6) when several crews compete in the Occoquan Sprints in Springfield, Va.
