This weekend, the Virginia Cavaliers will serve as host for the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational. The meet will be held at Lannigan Field and will host eighteen teams. The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at 3:30 pm with the hammer competitions and continue Saturday morning at 10 am.

The Virginia women, who have a number of NCAA regional qualifiers, look to showcase their strong performance. Last year’s winner of the long jump and 100m, Kiamesha Otey (Quinton, Va.) is regionally qualified in both events. Teammate Eliese Mitchell (Narvon, Pa.) looks to reclaim her first place honors in the hammer. So far this year, Mitchell has qualified regionally in the hammer, shot put, and discus. For the distance team, Dawn Cleary (Woodbridge, Va.) leads the ACC in the 3000m steeplechase with a regionally qualifying time of 10:18.87. Jane Maxwell (Charlotte, NC) has a provisionally qualifying time of 35:12.25 in the 10K. Competing for the first time in the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson meet, first-year Rachel Marks (Derby, N.Y.) is regionally ranked in the high jump. Marks leads the women’s team in the high jump with a height of 1.70m. The women’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams are also regionally qualified.

On the men’s side, Brian Kollar’s (Virginia Beach, Va.) 67.66m javelin throw is regionally qualified and has him top-ranked in the ACC. Distance runner Matt Ruhl (Somerdale, NJ) is ranked in both the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase in the ACC. Sprinter Scott Kimball (Bridgewater, Ma.) is also ranked in the ACC’s top five in the 100m and 200m events. First years Kellen Blassingame (Silver Spring, Md.) and David Sullivan (Clifton, Va.) lead the men’s team in the 400m and pole vault events respectively.

This meet serves as a lead-in to the ACC Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Virginia on April 12, 2003 at Lannigan Field. Results for the meet can be found at http://www.monmouth.com/~scullion/scullio3.htm.
