Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 2 seeded Virginia Cavaliers beat No. 3 seeded North Carolina 13-12 in overtime Friday evening at Kolckner Stadium to advance to the ACC Championship game Sunday against Duke at 3:00 pm.
Carolina bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the first period before Virginia came surging back with six straight goals. The three UNC goals were scored by Kyle Bell, Lance Zimmerman, and Austin Garrison. Virginia followed up with three goals from John Christmas, and one each from Chris Rotelli, Billy Glading and Jack deVillers. The teams flip-flopped in scoring to allow Virginia to take the 7-5 lead into the locker room.
The Tar Heels had the momentum coming out of halftime as they scored two straight goals. Freshman Scott Falatach scored his third goal of the evening and sophomore Mike McCall added another as North Carolina tied the score at 7 all. Virginia’s Joe Yevoli scored his first goal of the night and freshman Kyle Dixon followed his teammates shot to put the Cavaliers back up by two. North Carolina’s Steven Will added the last point of the third period by hitting the back of the net with 1:10 left on the clock.
The Cavaliers and Tar Heels traded scores before North Carolina scored three straight goals to end the fourth period and send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Virginia’s Joe Yevoli scored the winning goal with 1:40 left in the period. It was Yevoli’s third goal on the night. Virginia’s Rotelli also added three goals on the evening. For the Tar Heels, freshman Falatach had four goals.
On the game, Virginia out-shot North Carolina 45-42 and had a 48-39 advantage in ground balls.
