The Virginia Cavaliers will be competing in the Penn Relays, one of the most competitive events of the year. Various colleges, high schools, clubs, junior and middle schools will compete in this 108 year-old event. Along with the Virginia Cavaliers, 14 other Virginia schools will be competing in this meet. The schedule of events starts Thursday and runs through Sunday.
Virginia looks to feature prominently in many events, especially those of the ACC Champions and NCAA Provisional and Regional qualifiers. Leading performers, Kiamesha Otey, Dawn Cleary, and Eliese Mitchell represent the strong all-around performance of the women’s team. Otey (Quinton, Va.- New Kent) has accumulated many accolades this year including ACC Indoor Champion in the long jump, USA Indoor Champion in the long jump, and several meet wins in the 100m, 200m, and long jump. She currently holds regional qualifying ranks in the 100m, 200m, and long jump, and leads the ACC in the 200m. Along with teammate Caroline Harvey (Mechanicsville, Va- Atlee) who placed 6th in the ACC long jump, Otey will be competing in the long jump for this meet. Otey will also run in the 4×100 relay. Teammate and ACC Champion in the 400m Carielle Doe (Reston, Va.- South Lakes) holds a regionally qualifying time in this event. Competing in the 400IH for the meet, regionally qualified Natalie Randolph (Washington, D.C.- Sidwell Friends) placed second for this event at the ACC Championships.
ACC Champion in the javelin, Anne Bobiak (Media, Pa- North Penn) ranks in the top 3 in the ACC for this event. School record holder in the pole vault, Vika Osipenko (Mechanicsville, Va.- Atlee) is regionally qualified in the NCAA for this event.
The Virginia women’s team will also be competing in the 4×1500, 4×200, and distance medley relay events.
On the men’s side, McGavock Dunbar (Birmingham, Al.- Briarwood Chrst.) is ACC Outdoor Champion in the 800m and holds several meet wins in this event. He currently holds a regionally qualifying time in this event. Leading the ACC in the javelin with a regionally qualifying distance of 69.22m, Brian Kollar (Virginia Beach, Va.- First Colonial) also placed first in the outdoor ACC Championship in this event.
Matt Ruhl (Somerdale, NJ- Triton Regional) will represent the Virginia Cavaliers in the 3000m steeplechase. Ruhl leads the men’s team in this event and placed 4th in the ACCs with a time of 9:13.64. Teammate Andy Filachek (Manalapan, N.J.- Christian Bros. Acad.) will run in the 5K. His time of 30:02.37 in the 10000 earned him 2nd place in this event.
Scott Kimball (Bridgewater, Ma.- Bridgewater-Ryn) excels in the 100m and 200m runs for the men’s team and holds several meet wins for these events.
