ATHENS, GA – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team ended the 2003 season Thursday as the doubles team of fourth year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.) and first year Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) fell to No. 5-8 seeded Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships.
The rain that fell throughout the day in Athens, forced the match to be played indoors and caused the start to be delayed several hours. In the first set, the teams stayed on serve until the Aggie team went up a break to take a 4-2 lead. Cook and Matijevic won the next two games to close out the first set 6-2. The Texas A&M kept that momentum going in the second set, winning the first five games en route to taking the set 6-1.
Duquette and Stewart were key to the Cavaliers’ success in 2003, when they went 20-8 on the season. Duquette closed out his collegiate career with the match, while Stewart is one of 11 players on the Cavalier roster with eligibility remaining.
