YUBA CITY, CALIF. – Virginia men’s tennis first year Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) won a doubles title at a USTA Futures Event, the Sunset Moulding Men’s Pro Tennis Tournament in Yuba City, Calif this past weekend. Rizza teamed with Travis Rettenmaier to win the title of the 16-team draw by defeating two of the top four seeded teams.

In all three wins on the court (the team won one match by default), the team came back to win in three sets after dropping the first set. In the semifinals, Rizza and Rettenmaier defeated the No. 1 seeded team of Ryan Haviland and K.J. Hippensteel, both former All-Americans at Stanford.

“This is a great accomplishment for Rylan,” stated Virginia assistant coach Tony Bresky. “He has been working hard since our season ended and it is great to see that hard work pay off.”

The USTA Futures Tour is a professional tour designed for players building their professional careers. Current college players are allowed to play on the tour to gain experience and improve their ranking, while not accepting prize money.
