University of Virginia graduate Jessica Coleman and the rest of the USA Field Hockey team is one win away from earning a berth in the 2004 Olympics after a semifinal defeat of Chile in the 2003 Pan Am Games which are being held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Coleman, a midfielder for the USA, was a part of the 6-1 victory today that sent the USA to the gold medal match in which they will face the winner of the Argentina-Uruguay match.
Holding on to a 1-0 halftime lead, the USA scored five times in the second half to open up a 6-0 lead, including one that came as the American corner defense broke up a Chilean penalty corner and started a counterattack that saw Tracey Fuchs send a pass to a diving Kelli Gannon, who scored as she fell to the pitch, giving the USA a 3-0 lead. The side from Chile scored in the final seconds, ending a 279-minute shutout streak, the longest in the games this tournament.
The final will take place Wednesday, August 13 at 5:30 pm.
