CHARLOTTESVILLE – Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s tennis teams earned preseason rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. For the men, Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) is ranked both in singles and in doubles with fellow second-year Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.). The women’s doubles team of second-years Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) is also ranked.
Stewart, last season’s ACC and ITA Mideast Region Rookie of the Year, begins his second season at No. 26 in the singles rankings, a career-high. He and Rizza begin their first season paired in doubles at No. 32 in the nation. Last season, Stewart was ranked in doubles for much of the year with Michael Duquette.
James and Stern open the season ranked No. 15 in doubles, the highest ranking for the team. Last season as first-years, the team were ranked as high as No. 31 before finishing the year at No. 36.
