Box Score

Despite getting the early lead, the Cavaliers (1-1) fell to the Princeton Tigers (1-0) in field hockey action at the Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton. Virginia went ahead 1-0 the 21st minute of play on a goal by Allison Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central), but the Tigers scored the final three goals of the game to secure the win. Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) started in the cage and notched five saves, and Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) also had a defensive save late in the game.

Virginia’s Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) stole the ball in the Virginia backfield and worked the ball up to Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), who in turn got the ball up to Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Tex./Trinity Valley), who drew a short corner for the Cavaliers in the circle. After Gerfen’s first shot was saved, the Hoos drew another corner. Again Gerfen’s shot was saved, but Gerfen raced to the ball and blocked it over to Flynn, who chipped it to the roof of the goal for a 1-0 lead 21 minutes into the half. Princeton answered just before the end of the first half as they drew a corner and on the play, Lizzie Black took the stick stop standing up and settled the ball before firing to the back of the boards in the 32nd minute. The teams went into the break tied 1-1.

The Tigers scored two quick goals, both coming in the first five minutes of the second half. Claire Miller stuck in a pass from Lauren Quinn two minutes into the second stanza to give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish, and two minutes later Lauren Ehrlichman fired home a pass from Black. Ehrlichman’s pass deflected off a Virginia stick to the top of the cage for the Tigers’ third goal. Bojanic prevented another score for Princeton as she stopped a Black shot on another corner play as time was winding down to preserve the 3-1 score.

The Cavaliers will play Drexel at the Class of 1952 Stadium on Sunday, September 7. Game time has been moved to 12:00.
