The University of Virginia took the early lead and then drew a corner in extra time that Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired to the boards as the Cavaliers defeated Drexel 2-1 today in Princeton, N.J. After Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) gave UVa the 1-0 lead in the first half, the Cavaliers had to rally in the extra session to improve to 2-1 and allowed only one short corner in the game.
Sarah Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) blocked up a Drexel 16-yard hit and sent the ball up to Katie Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley) at the top of the circle. Phillips slotted the ball to Link, who dribbled and shot into the boards for the 1-0 lead with 11:15 to play in the first half. The Cavaliers led 1-0 at the break.
Virginia allowed only one corner in the game and though the Hoos’ defense withstood the short corner, Drexel scored with just over five minutes to play in regulation on just their third shot of the game.
In the extra time session, Biffy Cornelison (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) sent the ball up to Phillips, who dribbled into the circle and took a shot. The ball was saved but Cornelison picked it up on an overlapping run and shot the ball again, which was again saved. The Cavaliers were awarded a corner on the play. Cornelison sent the ball into Allie Flynn (Readington Township, N.J./Hunterdon Central), who stopped it for Gerfen. Gerfen fired it to the boards for the win 6:38 into the extra time.
Logan Carr (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had the start and made two saves.
Virginia returns home to host Longwood University on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Game time against the Lancers is 7:00 pm.
